| Well, I stayed up most of the night last night trying to finish this
piece for the YSO (leaving things to the last minute, as usual). I was
going to go to the practice today, but I didn't quite get it all
printed out in time. It was snowing pretty hard, too. Oh well,
hopefully next week isn't too late... and hopefully the piece isn't too long. If anyone wants the music, I can
probably email your part if you give me your address.
I've never composed for a real orchestra before, so any feedback is
appreciated (especially if I've done anything really outrageous). And,
of course, I'm open to naming suggestions.
P.S. Am I supposed to write the horns a perfect fifth above what I want them to sound?
| My friend has been kind enough to draw some concept pictures for Slurpee Man. If all goes well, he'll be making a short computer animated movie after he finishes his current project, and I'll be writing the soundtrack. Should be fun!
This is the insidious Dr. Broccoli (or Doc Brock, if you will). He's pretty short, likes to dress sharp (that is a corsage on his tux), and turns corners like a bus. Comes with having such a giant cranium, I guess. Anyway, he'll be the main villian for Slurpee Man, sort of like Lex Luthor and Superman.

Up next is Coffee Man with Two Stir Sticks. I haven't quite defined his role yet, but he'll probably be Dr. Broccoli's main henchman. He's very quick, but also has a tendency to talk too fast and has a slight twitch. We're considering giving him a partner (probably a mug of tea or something), but that might not happen.

The rest of these guys are concepts that may or may not make it into the final movie. The carrots were meant to be Dr. Broccoli's bodyguards, the tomato some sort of cowardly double agent, and the eggplant... I have no idea.

And, in my own department, the theme for Dr. Broccoli. The volume might be a bit low, sorry about that
I'm working on a more serious piece too, hopefully I'll finish it soon and get it posted. Like sometime this month. Maybe.
P.S. 5/5 for the Batman soundtrack, by the way. Danny Elfman is eccentrically excellent.
Edit: Bah, the audio is messing up for some reason. Let's try this.
Edit 2: *sigh* No clue what's messing it up...
Edit 3: This'll work. Now I just have a really messy post. http://www.freewebs.com/wishbone747/Broccoli2.mp3
Edit 4: Or not. Apparently Xanga doesn't like my links. If you copy/paste that address into the address bar in your browser, you can listen to it. :p

| I was talking to one of my friends a couple hours ago on MSN, and the conversation ended up going towards his worldview. We've had a few discussions concerning similar topics in the past, but this time I really got to see how he thinks. Because he's an atheist, he doesn't believe in a definite, well, anything. I realize that that's not true of all atheists, but he definitely fits into the category that doesn't believe in any absolutes. There's no truth or falsehood, right or wrong, good or bad... it all depends on the person's mentality. His own personal morality seems to be about minimizing harm, although he doesn't commit to that entirely. He stated that he thought he was closer to the truth than, say, a Hindu or a Christian, but kind of backed out on that when I pointed out that he didn't believe in truth. He also admitted that, assuming that there was such thing as right and wrong, there is a possibility that he's wrong. Anyway, could you all pray for him? His name is Henry, and he's taking music composition in college right now. Very talented, but also very misguided.
Isn't it awesome that we can know that we're saved? That really amazed me (again) tonight as I was thinking about our conversation. Full assurance, no doubt... wow. God is truly the best there is.

I mentioned this noble saviour of various sugary liquids to a couple of
you last weekend. He's the product of the imagination of me and a few
of my friends, and has now graduated into a fully 3D model. I have a
friend (the same guy who did the model above) who is taking computer
animation and stuff in university, and he's going to try to make a
short film centred around Slurpee Man. I'll be writing the score. I
finally came up with a theme that I'm satisfied with, but I'm still not
used to the program I'm using. The sound quality feels kind of raw and
unrefined, hopefully that will improve with experience and familiarity with
the new interface and controls. The piece itself is kind of
derivative, but that's part of the fun. I'm sure that Slurpee Man will
end up parodying most of the popular superheroes. Oh yeah, I'll make it so that the music doesn't end on an imperfect cadence when it's
actually used in the movie or when I finish this track.
Edit:
Bah, it looks like there's a few blips in this after the upload. They
weren't in the original MP3. Oh well, try to ignore them.

| Yikes, I'm extremely late in updating this thing. Sorry about that. I've been crazy busy over the last few weeks, but now I get about a month off. I just got back from two gala concerts and I'm pretty tired, so this is going to be a really minuscule post. In fact, I'm having trouble with writing anything coherent right now, so I'll just say hi and run.
Hope to see a few of you tomorrow night!
P.S. Thanks to everyone for your support before, during and after the Youth Symphony performances. I really appreciated it.
